the broken ones the ones with holes in their hearts and glass shards digging into their paws they come pawing a my front door
and I, the fool, invite them in listen to their stories ease their pain, share their burden if only for a little while lend them warmth
it's only temporary they say the storm will come the storm that's linked to their hearts with an unbreakable, heavy chain of history and heritage
and I look in their tired, dead eyes and know I'll have to let go
